When buying a Mac, a number of applications already available innate and ready for use. I just need to buy 1 set of iWork applications to replace the functions normally provided by Microsoft Office.
Connecting my post about cleaning applications in the Mac, this time I will discuss about what applications are really needed in my MacBook.
With the principle will only install the required applications, so I have removed many of the applications that illegal and I never use again. In addition, of course I still need certain applications to support my activities everyday. And all (God willing) I get the official, whether paid or free.
If the breakdown, along with examples of some of the needs of the application are as follows:
- Word processor. Pages that already are part of the iWork package, along with Numbers and Keynote. If you want a free and qualified maybe next time I’ll try NeoOffice.
- Spreadsheet. Numbers should suffice as a simple data processing for the purposes of home
- Presentation. Although including a very rare applications I use, but Keynote is really a powerful enough application. Even when compared with even Powerpoint
- Music player. I remained loyal only using iTunes
- Browsers. I use Safari as main browser. But my wife more often using Firefox
- Email. So far I quite rely on Mail, innate Mac applications to handle some of my email accounts on MobileMe and Gmail.
- Twitter. Almost all applications for Twitter clients that good is freely available. I have TweetDeck and DestroyTwitter, but I often use is Tweetie.
- Chatting. Although the Mac has an innate program called iChat to chat, but I never use it. I really like Adium, a multi-chat application account so innovative and fun
- Photo storage. Innate iPhoto application could meet my needs for photo management. Plus this application could sync with my gallery on MobileMe (or even Flickr!)
- Image editor. I used to use Photoshop and Pixelmator. But now, I’ve deleted both the application and replace it with Gimp, an open source application powerful enough. Even in some ways, Gimp is easier to use. For vector graphics editor, I installed Inkscape, which is also available for free
- Quicksilver. I like this one application. Quicksilver brings to my own experience with maximizing the keyboard to perform the functions of task sharing
- FTP client. Now I just use FileZilla to transfer files with FTP
Some other applications are mostly inherited from the Mac and sometimes I use also for certain purposes. For example, to watch movies (iDVD), dictionary (Dictionary), contacts management (Address Book), calendar (iCal) and many others.
