Business strategies from the SWOT TOWS

During the SWOT Matrix is always used in the analysis for planning strategy and marketing. SWOT Matrix is the acronym of Strengths (power) Weaknesses (weakness), Opportunities (opportunity) and Threats (threats). Analysis method is more emphasis on the internal situation and condition factors, ie strengths and weaknesses of yourself or a company (SW). After that newly learned and taken into account external factors, threats and opportunities (OT).

SWOT analysis method Matrix internal strength to make the most of resources and experience to achieve the target. But as the changing needs of human and technological growth have shifted from conventional to digital, Matrix SWOT analysis method is becoming obsolete. Because the power (internal) may not necessarily comply with good market opportunities and able to withstand stress or challenge.

Therefore, the planners and marketers now switch to using TOWS Matrix analysis. Their first opportunity to study and investigate the external factors, because it is considered to be more dynamic and competitive. External factors include the following; way of promotion of competition, consumer culture, consumer purchasing power, the rupiah, government policy, political climate, socio-economic changes, population profiles, lifestyle, social rules, changes in technology, and others.


After getting external information, then made some adjustments to improve the internal potential to create lucrative opportunities. Based on Matix TOWS analysis is then performed four subsequent steps, namely;

  1. Maximizing the potential or force
  2. Ensuring that weaknesses do not burden the business or progress
  3. Maximize the opportunities available
  4. Anticipating all forms of challenges and provide some solutions

Based on Matix TOWS analysis also yielded four strategies for achieving the target, namely;

  1. SO (aggressive Strategy): Using the internal strength to take the opportunities that exist outside.
  2. ST (Diversification strategy): Using the internal strengths to avoid threats that are outside.
  3. WO (Turn Around) – Using external opportunities that exist for reducing internal weaknesses.
  4. WT (Defensive strategy) – Minimize weaknesses and threats that may exist.

TOWS Matrix Analysis more sure we can properly take into account and take advantage of every opportunity to increase business outside. At the same time we also can learn and utilize internal potentials. By analyzing these external (TOWS Matrix) we are also able to anticipate the challenges of any external change, even change it (the challenge) a new opportunity.

Whereas in a smaller image scale, especially in the competitive world of business you’ve probably heard the term zero sum games, in which the losing side is certain to lose. Strategies to defeat each other like that should have had to be abandoned, because it only drained a lot of cost, effort, and thoughts. The best strategy we should use is to win a battle without a battle.

The strategy is known as the pattern out of the competition the Red Sea (Red Ocean), and moved to Ocean Blue (Blue Ocean). So each party is not thought and applies to outdo each other, but trying to support each other with respective advantages to achieve a common goal together. Such cooperation strategies are better able to bring positive synergies and beneficial to both parties.

At the present time, cooperating with other parties better ensure the progress of business. There are various forms of cooperation either online or offline, and one of them is to build the network. Anyone who can master the consumer network, then he would be successful in business.

Here’s a few things to consider in creating a good business partnership teams;

  1. Creating a clear target, so that each individual and the collective team understand their roles and believe there is no agenda or specific purpose hidden.
  2. Each party are equally to be consistent with what has been agreed, so wake up mutual trust.
  3. Having a sense of interdependence and mutual belonging.
  4. Self-assertive but not mutually supporting each other, especially when you’re facing challenges, so as to create a sense of comfort in working.
  5. Have a high responsibility for running their respective roles based on business measures that have been designed previously.
  6. Be open and try to understand what others feel.

I conclude that the TOWS Matrix is the most profitable business analysis to create the design of business strategy. TOWS Matrix analysis will yield the best business strategy when combined with the pattern of cooperation, in which each other to build a business network, and receive a complementary, and both business and focus on common goals.

Business strategy based on patterns of cooperation would also have to meet the rules of good cooperation. Some rules of cooperation that I mentioned above outline emphasizes the importance of credibility, to attract the interest of many parties to work together and create a strong sense of mutual trust. As it is never disclosed by Walter D. Scott, “The success or failure of the business is actually more influenced by mental attitude than mental capacity.” Course design business strategies will be more perfect if actually used in practice in the field.
