Google Android is one of the most popular operating system for smartphones and tablet devices. But if the OS is secure enough to protect user data?

Now, researchers from security firm Sophos Vanja Svajcer believes that the pressure to increase the Android-based security protocols have been continuing for several months.

What is certain is one of the serious proof of concept exploits for Android was made public last week. Vulnerability found in the WebKit browser mobile platform Android 2.1 has been fixed by Google in the latest iteration of Android 2.2. or Froyo.

“But the problem, Froyo only used by 36 percent of all Android devices. This means that the majority of devices still can be successfully attacked by using the exploit,” explained Svajcer, as reported by Softpedia.

“And unfortunately, a recent study by Coverity indicates that the Linux kernel 2.6.32 used by the Android 2.2 includes a number of high vulnerability, potential for exploitation that can be combined with the exploitation of Webkit,” he added

Svajcer also recommends that Google make updates automatic safety mechanism similar to that found on desktop operating systems today.

“Of course the modern smartphone just as powerful as desktop computers. So that needs a security update mechanism should not be carelessly to the operating system developers and handset manufacturers,” he added.
