Some scientists Chile reportedly is developing a vaccine to reduce levels of alcohol addiction. They hope the vaccine can be tested on humans next year.

Genetic therapy will be based on aldehyde dehydrogenase enzyme that digests the group responsible for alcohol and alcohol tolerance level in the human body.

Head of research team at the Faculty of Natural Sciences and Mathematics Recalcine Chile and the private lab, Dr. Juan Asenjo, explaining approximately 20 percent of Asia’s population lack the enzyme aldehyde dehydrogenase, so often experienced ‘strong reaction that makes them no longer have appetite to consume alcohol.”

The vaccine will provide a similar reaction with increasing anxiety, dizziness and tachycardia (accelerated heartbeat), such as quoted by the Straits Times.

“With this vaccine will decrease the desire to consume alcohol due to those reactions,” said Dr. Asenjo.

The vaccine has been tested on rats dependent on alcohol and had succeeded in reducing their consumption by half.

How it works almost the same vaccine with drugs that can reduce the level of addiction to cigarettes, but has a better efficiency due to specifically target kidney cells and prevent negative effects on the entire cell.

“The idea is to reduce consumption levels up to 90-95 percent in humans,” added Dr. Asenjo.
