One reason why computer manufacturers seem slow to adopt ultrabook, even though they want it is because production costs are not small. Yeah.. technology had to be paid handsomely. However, now comes a solution that could slightly reduce production costs, hoping to trim the end of the Apple MacBook Air.

The site Digitimes reports that the two manufacturers, Acer and ASUS are moving into alternative materials that are used to make the case of ultrabook. If the reports are true, Acer and ASUS will be using fiberglass as the material for the case of ultrabook they produce. Reportedly, fiberglass they use comes from Mitac Precision Technology.

The reason behind their transition to fiberglass, aluminum unibody as opposed to being used by the MacBook Air, is due to the difference in price, fiberglass is more expensive $5 – $10 instead of aluminum alloy material. According to Digitimes, the selection of this material will save on production costs up to $20 for a whole ultrabook.

While currently the two producers have worked with the aluminum-shelled ultrabook, Acer said it will launch a 15-inch fiberglass model in 2012. However, no information specifying when ASUS will begin removable fiberglass.
