Who is not familiar with Kinect, at least you’ve heard his name on the Xbox game console. While Microsoft is the creator Kinect, it does not mean they have created the best motion controller technology for the consumer, at least that’s what SoftKinect.
On the occasion of CES 2012 in Las Vegas a while ago, SoftKinect stated that the technology “Time of Flight” is used in DepthSense DS311 camera is more responsive and accurate than the technology used in Kinect PrimeSense.
Time of Flight sends a signal to the room, waiting to bounce off objects and return to the DS311, which then allows it to draw a 3D map of space in front of the camera in real time.
This detection method allows the DS311 to be used more accurately than Kinect and can even work when the user is 10 inches from the device, typically a user must be within 3m of Kinect. Time of Flight is also able to identify two hands or fingers are raised, increasing the variety of gesture-based inputs that can be used with the camera.
DepthSense DS311 will come with 3D gesture-control system development, Lisu 3.0 for developers to create new applications that use these technologies. This provides a fairly complete package for developers to start creating applications. Yup, for now DepthSense DS311 is only available to developers, because consumers can not buy the DS311 if no application is supported.
